Hello Volker,

You have a very nice, and informative website!  I live in British Columbia Canada.  Here are some pictures of my 1980 Honda XL500S to post in your picture gallery.  One just after I got it, and two I took today.
I bought it for cheap because the previous owner had broken the kickstart shaft off.  I did not want to pull the motor apart to fix it so I removed the left crankcase cover and welded a piece of 5/8" hardened steel bar onto the end of the shaft.   Then I ground it until it fit nicely through the crankcase cover.  Then I fabricated a piece of steel that fit my kick start lever and slipped over the welded on shaft.  Next I pinned the shaft to the kick lever assembly with three hardened steel clips.  It works very well!  The swing arm, rear wheel, and shocks are off of a 1981 XL500S.  The front forks are off of a 1980 XR500 for more travel.  I also recently repainted the fenders, covers, and tank Helios Red since it is a US model.  We have tested this XL and it makes almost 41 horsepower at the rear wheel!  So it may have a big bore, and run higher compression than normal.  The torque of this XL motor is amazing!  You can edit this message if you want.  If you want to see pictures of my other bikes go to www.bikepics.com/members/db75xl100/

Thank you,

Daniel
